Environment Agency figures show that more than 1,000 of those homes are at ‘high risk’ of being flooded

More than 5,900 properties on Teesside are at medium or high risk of being flooded.

According to figures from the Environment Agency 4,236 properties in Teesside postcode areas are considered to be at medium risk of flooding while 1,742 are at high risk.

Of the 4,236 properties considered to be at medium risk, 2,372 were residential properties while 1,108 of the properties at high risk of flooding were residential.

The TS2 postcode district had the highest proportion of medium and high risk properties with more than one in five of them categorised as such by the Environment Agency.

The area includes both sides of Tees, including Port Clarence which was badly hit by floods in 2013.

Since the deluge, which forced families from their homes, work has started on a £19m flood defence scheme.

TS15, which includes Yarm, had the next largest proportion of properties at medium or high risk of flooding with 11% fitting into this category.

The data is taken from an Environment Agency survey titled Risk of Flooding From Rivers and Seas and the latest figures are correct as of March 2015.

If a property is at medium risk of flooding there is between a one in 100 and one in 30 chance of that premises becoming flooded within the space of a year.

If a property is categorised as high risk then there is a greater than one in 30 chance of that property being affected by flooding in any given year.

Across the whole of England 153,673 residential properties are considered to be at high risk of flooding while 352,030 are in areas which place them at medium risk of flooding.

When non-residential properties are included there are 807,000 properties in England out of 29.5 million that are at medium or high risk of being flooded within the next year.

As well as potentially having to cope with being flooded, being placed in a category where there is a risk of at least 1.3% of being flooded in a given year is likely to raise the cost of insuring the property.
