The Client

The Hebden Bridge Picture House first opened its doors in 1921 and is one of the last civic owned cinemas in Britain. Originally boasting over 900 seats its first screening was a double bill of Torn Sails and The Iron Stair, with the Picture House rapidly becoming the main place of entertainment for the weavers, mill-workers, and other residents of Hebden Bridge and the upper Calder Valley. It has been in use as a cinema ever since.

The Issue

Hebden Bridge has suffered the worst flood in living memory in 2015, and the recent Calderdale Flood Commission said authorities must act now to deal with “immediate issues and future risk.” The scale of the floods meant the Picture House required a range of flood protection, that was dis-mountable but quick to install in the event of flood risk.

The Solution

The Flood Company installed Buffalo Heavy Duty Barriers to protect the Picture House from future flooding. The Buffalo Heavy Duty Barrier has the benefit of being robust but simple and quick to install. The flood barrier now protects the building up to 1.6m high.
